what are the basic tools i need to start making jewelry?
What are the basic tools and supplies i need to get started on making jewelry. and does anyone know any good websites or books to help me learn?
Chain nose pliers -- like needle nose pliers but on ridges to mark your metal.
Cutters -- diagonal or flush, and memory wire cutters if you plan to use memory wire.
Round nose pliers to make loops.
Crimping pliers are nice to make finished crimps, although you can get by with chain nose pliers.
Flat nose pliers if you intend to do wire working.
You will need
beads,
stringing material(s) depending on your project
such as monofilament (aka fishing line - get 'low memory'),
nylon coated wire such as Beadalon or Accu-Flex (0.15 or 0.18 are good), bead thread
ear wires or clip-on earring backs if you want to make earrings
Clasps such as lobster claws, toggles
Jump rings, head pins and/or eye pins
Crimp tubes or beads
Work over a towel or a design board or sticky mat
Michaels has several kits which give you most of the components you need to begin for $16.99.
There are also several packages which combine several things such as head pins, stringing material, crimps, and jump rings in one package -- Jewelry Essentials has one for $2.99 and one by Blue Moon for $3.99.
