How does scale calibration work for larger scales (10,000 lb+)?
How does calibration process work? Could a guy be able to calibrate different models of scales using a standard set of equipment? I know nothing about the process but it is really important.
Obviously, a calibration technician working on a large scale does not carry certified 10,000 pound weights around with him or her. Such large weights are generally measured using what is called a load cell, which can operate according to several different principles. But we can consider a load cell to be any transducer that produces a change in voltage output that is directly and linearly proportional to the change in weight placed on it. The load cell will have this linear quality over a certain range of weights, and the linearity will not hold for weights outside of the range. The physics of the transducer are known, so in order to calibrate the scale, all I need to do is to verify that the excpected relationship of (change in output Volts) / (change in weight) is equal to the expected value within the allowed error. I can do this by placing an unknown "heavy" mass on the scale and measuring the output using a meter and a test point in the scale's electrical box, and then add a convenient, known, certified, smaller mass (5 pounds?) and verify the expected change in output. I should repeat the process to verify that the measurement is reproducable.
