Why does a digital watch/clock look italic in the mirror?
When you look at a digital display it looks normal, not italic, normal type face. However if you look at a digital watch or clock radio in the mirror the time looks italic... why is this?
Interesting. I have tried it myself and there does seem to be a difference. When I look at the display directly I can see that the digits do actually slope to the right, but they seem to slope much more when I look at them in the mirror. But when I keep looking for a minute or more, it gets harder to tell if there is a difference.
This is an optical illusion. Our brain is interpreting what we see. Perhaps it is so used to looking at digital displays that when it recognises one it makes a correction for the slope of the digits. When we look in the mirror, the display and the numbers are not so easily recognised by the brain, so it does not make the correction at first.
It is well known that the brain makes adjustments to what we actually see (or hear or touch, etc). Many years ago someone proved this by wearing special goggles which turned everything he saw upside down. By the end of a week his brain had adjusted to this and he suddenly began to see everything the right way up. When the goggles were removed everything was upside down again for a few days, because his brain was still adjusting for the effect of the goggles and had to re-adjust to the original perspective.
